The goal of this SIG is to increase ophthalmologists’ knowledge on XFS and XFG, and to support the optimal clinical care in XFG in Europe.

1. Ongoing activities of the SIG

Course at EGS 2020 meeting

Goal: to cover research and clinical developments and practical applications

Clinical study / survey:

There is an ongoing European glaucoma referral study (first time referral for glaucoma surgery: Hollo G., Hommer A., Goni F.).

Goal: To design a study on the current status of XFG treatment patterns in Europe, involving the EGS Next Generation Partnership members.

2. Provide a relevant breakthrough in the field

Peripapillary and Macular Vessel Density Measurement by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Pseudoexfoliation and Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
J Glaucoma 2020 Feb 19. doi: 10.1097/IJG.0000000000001464. Comment: When the eyes are age and glaucoma-severity matched the peripapillary and macular OCT angiography perfusion is similar in POAG and XFG. Thus, OCTA may not be a clinically preferred method to specifically characterize XFG.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Pseudoexfoliation in a Russian Population: The Ural Eye and Medical Study
Am J Ophthalmol. 2020 Feb; 210:158-166. doi: 10.1016/j.ajo.2019.10.003. Comment: In a well-defined population in Russia, XFS was positively associated with age, Russian ethnicity, IOP and presence of OAG. This study underlines that within one geographic area ethnicity influences the presence of XFS.

The search for EGS goal of “Paving the Way to Better Glaucoma Care” continues together with Outcome and other EGS Committees as well as SIGs, i.e. how to promote the best possible well-being and minimal glaucoma-induced visual disability in individuals with glaucoma within affordable healthcare systems.
