An observership constitutes a short-duration period to be spent at a glaucoma department with the possibility to follow consultants and their teams in daily clinical and surgical work on a full-time basis.
How it works
Visiting ophthalmologists cannot treat patients and the person in charge of the observership delivers a certificate of attendance at the end of the visiting period.
Goals
The goal of an observership is to gain understanding of the diagnostic criteria, aetiology, pathogenesis and management of various types of glaucoma, while observing in clinic and operating room.
Grants
The EGS is granting a 3000 Euros observership travel-grant for a one month period for candidates who meet the requested requirements and are selected by the EGS education committee.

To support a 1-month observership in the centres listed below.

- France, Institut du Glaucome de Paris (Yves Lachkar)
- Germany, University of Mainz (Esther Hoffmann)
- Greece, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Fotis Topouzis)
- Netherlands, Rotterdam Eye Hospital affiliated with Erasmus University Rotterdam (Hans Lemij)
- Spain, Hospital Clinico San Carlos. Universidad Complutense Madrid (Julian Garcia Feijoo)
- UK, Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust (Anthony King)
Other centres can also be considered for an observership, if a motivation for this choice is provided in the application letter. The observership will be considered as a positive factor when applying to a fellowship later on.
Amount
Single Contribution of 3000 €. If necessary, the applicant must be prepared to find additional funds to complete the 4-week observership.
Eligibility to Apply
Young ophthalmologist or resident who:
- has special interest in glaucoma
- desires to spend a one-month training period in a major glaucoma centre/department in Europe
- who works and resides within the geographical boundaries of Europe
An applicant not requiring funding may always apply for an observership in an EGS accredited center. This can be done irrespective of the country of origin. However, this application will not be done through the EGS or EGS website, but directly with the host center. Moreover, such observership will not grant an EGS certificate.
